Saying Goodbye to Summer

ROOTED Devotion

Focus Scripture

"Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in Him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit."— Jeremiah 17:7–8

There is something about these last weeks of summer that always makes my heart ache. Maybe you feel it too. I love summer. I love the freedom of waking up without carrying the weight of a school day before my feet even hit the floor. I love long walks, sunshine warming my face, green trees stretching toward the sky, flowers blooming without anyone telling them they should hurry. I love laughing more, breathing deeper, reading books simply because I want to, and finding little adventures tucked into ordinary days.

Summer feels...light. Not because life is perfect. Because the load is lighter. Then August quietly arrives. The planner comes back out. The inbox begins to fill. Meetings appear on the calendar. Lesson plans begin. Emails multiply. The mental checklist starts running before I even get out of bed. And before long, I can feel it. The tightness in my chest. The familiar weight settled back onto my shoulders. The exhaustion I know is coming. The feeling that there will never quite be enough time for the things that make me feel alive. Saying goodbye to summer feels a little like saying goodbye to breathing room.

And yet...

If I'm honest… There is excitement too. New faces. New personalities. Fresh notebooks. Books waiting to be opened for the very first time. Moments that will change children's lives. Watching students discover they can do hard things they never believed were possible. There is beauty waiting inside this school year. There always is.

So why does my heart feel so torn?

Because teaching is both a calling and a carrying. It is beautiful. And it is heavy. Both can be true. This year, though, I keep coming back to one word.

ROOTED.

Maybe that is what Jesus has been trying to teach me all along. Trees don't survive because storms never come. They survive because their roots go deeper than the storm. Jeremiah doesn't promise that the heat won't come. It does. He doesn't promise there won't be dry seasons. There will be. He simply says that the tree whose roots reach the water keeps living even when everything around it feels hard.

Maybe that's the invitation for us. Not to become stronger teachers. Not to become more productive. Not to carry more. But to send our roots deeper into Christ than our responsibilities reach.

Because let's be honest… Teaching comes at us from every direction. Every moment holds another decision. Another need. Another conversation. Another email. Another child. Another expectation. Another problem to solve.

All.

The.

Things.

We cannot possibly hold all of that by ourselves. And maybe we were never supposed to. ROOTED isn't another thing to add to your list. It's the lifeline that keeps you from drowning in the list. It reminds us who we are before the school year tells us who we should be. It reminds us whose voice matters before the world's voices become loud again. It reminds us that our identity isn't found in our classroom, our test scores, our parent emails, or whether everything goes according to plan.

Our roots belong in Christ.

Because when the winds begin to blow… Roots matter more than branches. As summer quietly closes its doors, I don't want to simply mourn what I'm losing. I want to carry what summer taught me. The slower pace. The deeper breaths. The joy. The wonder. The awareness of God's goodness. I want those things to travel with me into Room 204...or wherever God has planted me this year. Not because school will be easy. But because Jesus will be with me.

Teachers...

I know where you are. I know what your heart is feeling. Let's not walk into this year trying to be enough. Let's walk in deeply rooted in the One who already is.

Reflection

What part of summer are you grieving today?

What "weight" are you already picking back up that Jesus never asked you to carry?

What would it look like to send your roots a little deeper into Him before stepping into your classroom?

Prayer

Jesus,

As summer quietly slips away, my heart feels both grateful and sad. Thank You for the gift of rest, laughter, sunshine, and moments that reminded me who I am outside of my work.

As this new school year begins, help me resist picking up burdens You never asked me to carry. When the emails pile up, the meetings multiply, and the demands feel endless, remind me that my strength does not come from doing more. It comes from staying close to You.

Plant my roots deep in Your love. When the heat comes, keep my soul green. When the days feel dry, lead my roots to Living Water. Help me remember that I am Yours before I am anyone's teacher.

May this year not simply be productive.

May it be deeply rooted.

Amen.
